Haha, I thank you. Luth is right most things change in translation, though if the translation is the only thing around then it is better than nothing. For example, Beowulf.

Of course. Getting so off topic... did you ever see the Beowulf movie? I heard it was sort of a bomb.

I'm not really sure which I think is best. Because I've read the translated edition so many times, that's sort of ingrained in me by now. I'm very used to the language of the translator, and because it's in my own mother tongue, "seeing" imagery because quite easy, as I then projected nature surrounding me into the story. The original does in a way go easier, the writing and general flow is better. Right now I think it's a matter of getting used to this edition. But as a general, translated books do lose quite a bit of substance. Now I can hardly read novels that I know was originally in another language (though I take that and use it for inspiration to learn new languages ) - they just seem off, in a way. I refused to go see Beowulf. It seemed like everyone on my f-list on LJ was going Angelina Jolie mad, saying I had to see it, just for her. Eh? Sometimes I think I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't fancy the socks of her. But from the previews, I just got a very "meh" vibe off it, it looked so plastic-y and not-my-thing like.

It sounded really ridiculous from what I heard and read and I like Angelina Jolie. But you know what, she's not really in any good movies. There's just something about her that I find appealing. Not sure what though. It's weird. I never saw any of the Harry Potter movies for the same reasons, Rosie. lol.

There is another version of Beowulf from the 80s I believe, which is much better. Hmm, we need more fantasy style films.

lol. It wasn't widget. It was Spiderwick. I have no idea where Widget came from. Chronicles of Spiderwick. It has something to do with things existing in our world, like another dimension... I don't know. I haven't heard too much about it. We have gotten off topic. I think I will start a movies thread.

I read the books first - my two younger sisters couldn't see the movies, and the only way I could watch them was if they weren't around, so the only way I could get any LOTR was to read the books (eventually our copy of FOTR fell apart, TTT looked about as old as Gandalf, and ROTK began to lose the appendices from being read so often... I now have my very own copies of the first two books, lol.)

Yeah, I read FOTR and TTT, then I turned 13 and was officially allowed to watch the movies. Then I read ROTK while waiting for the ROTK movie to come out.
Aw I wish my LOTR books were that read. But sadly...only one of my siblings ever read LOTR after I did. So I still have 2 sibs who are LOTR deprived. They've seen the movies though. Wish it was the other way around.

I'm the only Tolkien reader in the family. It is disheartening

:[ That is sad, Rosie. I was lucky enough that my whole family loved LotR enough to take me to all the movies and stuff, regardless of how old I was. Cuz I definitely remember seeing those movies in theatre. I remember I read TTT and RotK before FotR... heh. Strange, I know.

I come from a family of literature elitists (which I don't mind) so they read other classics like "Anna Karenina" but Lord of the Rings is still awesome.

Haha yay literature elitist. I'm one of those too, I read Charles D.ickens and Jane Austen, etc. I plan on reading Anna Karenina someday...
Wow Lindy, you skipped FOTR until the end? Was it because you had seen the movie and went right to reading TTT and ROTK after that?
